Born in London and raised in a small village in the English countryside sounds fairly idyllic, but I always had an eye for adventure, and at 18 I moved to Antigua in the Caribbean to work in resort management. That was my first real exposure to superyachts, and I knew almost immediately that I wanted to build a career around them.

Fast forward more than two decades and I’m fortunate to have had a long and varied career in yachting, including over 17 years in command across private, charter and live-aboard operations. In recent years my focus has moved increasingly towards expedition-style cruising and ambitious owner programmes, operating well beyond the traditional Mediterranean and Caribbean routes. Most recently, as Captain of M/Y Maverick, I led a highly active world-cruising programme through the Red Sea, Baltic Sea, Norway, Svalbard, the Atlantic, Caribbean, Central America and the US East Coast. The programme was recognised with a BOAT International World Superyacht Award, something I’m especially proud to have been part of.

When I’m not at sea, you’ll usually find me at home in Stockholm with my wife. Days are often spent exploring the archipelago or pursuing various interests including cooking, furniture design and building, wine studies, skiing and diving. I enjoy being outdoors, travelling and discovering new places, which probably explains why I’ve always been drawn to yachts that are used to genuinely explore rather than simply move between familiar destinations.

Professionally, I see the role of Captain as much broader than navigation and vessel management. I’m there to represent the owner and their yacht, lead and develop a strong crew, manage complex operations and help turn an owner’s ideas into a safe, enjoyable and successful programme. I place a great deal of emphasis on crew culture and leadership, because in my experience an excellent crew is the foundation of a well-run yacht.

It is a privileged and exciting industry to be part of, and I’m particularly enthusiastic about the direction yachting is taking as more owners look beyond the traditional cruising grounds and use their yachts to explore further afield.
